THE FIRST EMBRYOSCOPE BABY (Twins) - Gunasheela Hospital

THE FIRST EMBRYOSCOPE BABY

Mrs. Geetha (Name changed) aged 31 years, had been married for 6 years and had been unable to conceive since. There had been mounting pressure from parents, in-laws and other family members to have their first child. This was putting a lot of strain on Geetha (Name changed) and her husband and they were getting desperate to have a baby.

That was when they came to the Gunasheela In-Vitro Fertility Center / Gunasheela Surgical & Maternity Hospital, a part of Gunasheela Hospital.

The couple was investigated thoroughly and it was seen that there were problems in both the partners. They opted for IVF / ICSI technique (Invitro fertilization / Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) technique; but were unsuccessful in the first attempt. Then Dr. Devika Gunasheela, Managing Director of Gunasheela Hospitals, decided to use the Embryoscope.

The Embryoscope is an advanced incubator with a time-lapse system. This is a brand new advancement in the world of IVF and is presently available in IVF clinics in 18 countries. It is cleared for clinical use in Europe and in the USA. At present, it is available in two other centres, in South India. The Embryoscope has been used in more than 3500 IVF treatments producing healthy babies after incubation and imaging in the Embryoscope.

This incubator allows the embryo to be observed minute by minute with from the point when in-vitro fertilization takes place to the moment when it is transferred into the uterus. It is based on conventional incubators used presently in embryology labs. However it has an image–capture system that allows an enormous amount of information to be obtained for every embryo. This information until now could not be recorded. The information is obtained in a non-invasive manner as it avoids taking out the embryo out of the incubator environment. Continuous image capture of every embryo is recorded as a video, allowing embryos to be monitored fully. All details that emerge during development are obtained. It is especially in couples who had recurrent IVF failures.

Geetha (Name changed) and her husband readily agreed as this technique increases the chances of conception by about 8- 12%.

Conception happened in May 2012 and the pregnancy course was uneventful. All parameters were regularly monitored, and the Doppler Scan and Anomaly scan were normal. The Embryoscope provided a record in pictures and videos of the very beginning of the future baby’s life. This gave the doctors and parents reassurance of the embryo’s health. This technique allowed embryo cell division to be viewed on a monitor in real time, capturing moments from the beginning of life. The entire process was free from any complications and stress.

Presently Geetha (Name changed) has reached term and has now delivered healthy twin babies – a boy and a girl, weighing 2.6 & 2.3kgs respectively on 1st of February 2013, at 9.33 & 9.34 am.  The mother and babies are in the pink of health, and we, at Gunasheela Hospitals, wish them a bright future and happy future.

As far as our knowledge goes, these are the “First Embryoscope Babies in South India”.

PREIMPLANTATION GENETIC SCREENING (PGS) - Gunasheela Hospitals

Gunasheela Fertility Center pioneers birth of India’s first baby through PGS Technology on a Frozen Embryo (in a 24 hour run)

This baby is special, as PGS technology was applied to the frozen embryo and the genetic screening was done in a record turnaround time of 24 hours

Bengaluru, September 28, 2016: Gunasheela Fertility Centre, the Bengaluru-based fertility centre and a wing of Gunasheela Surgical & Maternity Hospital – a pioneer that has introduced several firsts in the field of Infertility, has added another feather to its cap by facilitating the birth of First Baby in India through PGS Technology  on a Frozen Embryo (in a 24 hour run). With this Gunasheela Fertility Center heralds a new wave in parenting and also reiterates its commitment to be at the forefront of introducing innovative technologies.

If for Gunasheela Fertility this was demonstration of its cutting edge parenting technology yet again, for Shilpashree, and married for 19 years this was the moment of reckoning as she became the proud mother of a healthy baby girl weighing 2.52 kgs on September 14, 2016 at 6.02am.  Post delivery both the baby & mother are doing well, and to the satisfaction of medical team and the couple this high risk pregnancy yielded desired results with no major complications right from the conceiving stage to delivery.

Addressing media at a press conference here today, Dr. Devika Gunasheela, Fertility Specialist & Managing Director, Gunasheela Fertility Centre, said, Shilpashree (38 years old) and Satyanarayan (aged 49 years) visited our facility in 2013 with secondary infertility having had one abortion almost 17 years back. On investigating, our team diagnosed Shilpashree with polycystic ovarian disease and her husband Satyanarayan had low sperm count.  Following this diagnosis, she was advised for IVF / ICSI cycle in 2013 in which she conceived and it was a twin pregnancy.  But unfortunately she had a miscarriage at 5 months of gestation.

Her second IVF / ICSI cycle was in October 2014 in which no fresh transfer was done in view of maternal fever.

She underwent frozen embryo transfer in January 2015 in which she conceived and had an abortion at 1 ½ months. In view of the advanced age of the couple and severe male infertility factor, the couple was advised to have Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) test, pointed out Dr. Devika. In January 2016, we did PGS on five embryos of which only one embryo was normal which we transferred.  She conceived and it was a high risk pregnancy in view of her advanced age, Lupus Anticoagulant positive, Gestational Diabetes & on insulin; Blood Group Rh factor – negative and Hypothyrodism. Further, Dr. Devika indicated we did shirod cervical ligature because of her previous mid-trimester miscarriages.

According to Dr. Rajsekhar Nayak, Director, Gunasheela Fertility Centre, “This baby is special, as PGS technology was applied to the frozen embryo and the genetic screening was done in a record turnaround time of 24 hours.  After thawing of an embryo from the frozen state, the embryo can survive only for a very short time outside the body (approximately 24 – 48 hours).  Hence, the process of genetic screening that normally takes approximately 21 days because of its complexity was completed in a rapid time of 24 hours on the Ion Torrent NGS Platform in our in-house Gunasheela Genomics Laboratory.”  We have around 16 PGS pregnancies on the way.

Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) Facts
  1. PGS can reduce the time to a live birth by selecting only euploid embryos
  2. PGS can reduce the incidence of miscarriage
  3. Transfer of single euploid embryos gives the maximum chance of a live birth whilst minimizing the risk of a multiple pregnancy
  4. PGS is recommended for women above 37 years of age, couples with a family history of chromosome problems, recurrent miscarriages, repeated IVF failures & severe male factor infertility
  5. The procedure also goes a long way in reducing the likelihood of miscarriage; decreases the risk of abnormal pregnancy; reducing the amount of time & additional costs inferred with multiple IVF cycles and increases the likelihood of pregnancy with single embryo transfers (eSET).
